Bebe Saupique: February 2015

Those of you who have asked what color our nursery is know that we don't have one. ;-) We've been pretty minimalist with what we think we need for the new baby and, since I currently do child care at home, we already have several great kid spaces set up like our nap room and classroom. But we did make several small special spaces just for baby and I wanted to share them with you. As I put this together I realize that I look like a crazy baby prepper. It's true, I totally over thought some of this but that's so me. Having things in place helps me feel calm and capable when baby comes. Here's a peek into my madness:

Here's our IKEA hack co-sleeper. It took a little adjusting to get the mattress level and flush with ours but I think it turned out great! That's my side of the bed for easier night nursing.

"Welcome Bebe Saupique"banners. I made the top one and the bottom two are from one of the baby showers. I'll replace it with their name once we know if it's a boy or girl. : )

The Foxes won't be there during the night but for now are adorable. The big one Adrien brought home one day after work as the baby's first Doudou (French for Softie or soft soft). The tiny fox was a gift from Adrien's family from a doudou shop in France. In the middle of the bed is one of the sleep sacks. We were lucky to receive a fleece and cotton one so we can feel out the room temperature better.

Here's the crib again from another angle. I stuffed a rolled blue fleece blanket in the back of the mattress to make sure there was no gap between our mattresses. The crib is secure to the bed frame with packing straps. I'm guessing we will use this set up at night for the first few months then transfer them to the nap room at night. The baby will likely nap in the livingroom pack'n'play or in my arms during the day until they are bigger.

During the day we cover the beds with fleece throws to keep the cats off. They do a good job of staying out of the crib.

My dad helped me pick up this glider rocking chair from Savers the other day. I've always wanted one! It has a homemade (not by me) white cover on it now that matches the living room couch so I left it for now since the chair is currently in the living room. I will move it to the nap room later.

Here is what it will approximately look like once I recover it in the fabric I bought at Savers at the same time as the chair. I may paint it as well? The pillow is also from Savers. The nap room is currently grey, white, yellow and navy blue so I think it will match well and give me a cozy place to rock or nurse baby as the big kids are falling asleep.

This is what the nap room looked like before we changed it into an office to make room for the in-laws. I put the clouds up with white contact paper. The cot is a child care cot. The chair will be replaced with the rocking chair and after Baby outgrows their co-sleeper crib (3 months or so?) they will probably move directly in here with the others. for naps and bedtime on a floor bed. If we feel baby needs their own space (ie. they start acquiring too much personal toys and gear) we can move them into the office and convert it into their own room with a floor bed or toddler bed.

Here's an adorable bunting my aunt made for my baby shower.

It looks great on the other nap room wall! See how cute that will be with the rocking chair? A mobile used to hang from that string on the ceiling. I want to replace it with a cluster of paper lanterns and honeycomb party decorations in coordinating colors.

Diapering stuff: Looks like a lot since there is both cloth and disposable stuff there! There's newborn disposable diapers and disposable wipes. A package of compostable disposable newborn diapers. Cloth G diapers and a stack of Birdseye flat cloth diapers for inserts. Cloth pads for changing table in case it is too cold for baby. : ) disposable plastic gloves for really messy diapers and dry homemade cloth wipes. In the little cup is homemade cloth diaper cream, a bottle of Burt's Bees diaper cream and some great hand lotion for us.

I also added a jar of Vaseline for the first really yucky diapers and hung the cloth diaper wet bag nearby.

We tried to keep a space for each of the kitties too so they wouldn't feel kicked out of the bedroom or try to sleep on the changing table all the time, so we made a bed for each of them. From left to right baby's changing mat, Chester's cat bed and Sushi's basket. The embroidery hanging on the wall was made by my mom when I was little. She had it framed and gave it to us a couple Christmases ago. It reads "From Ghoulies and ghosties and :Long-Leggity Beasties and other Things that go BUMP in the night, Good Lord, Deliver Us"- Old English Litany

Bathtime Kit: All the stuff baby needs for their first bath and so much more! : ) Inside the little bathtub a friend lent us are hooded towels, baby towels, baby washcloths, rubber duckies (including one that takes the bath water temperature) and a squirt toy, a basket of Johnson and Johnson bath supplies, lotion and diaper cream and a baby grooming kit. We also got lots of lovely Burt's Bees baby wash, lotions and oils that are in the bathroom. Yum!

Kicked the baby clothes out of the office closet for now so the in-laws have a bit of space for their things. But here are all the adorable baby sleepers and big kid outfits all hung up in the other room by size and age. Can't wait to use these! They are all so cute!

Here's the rest of the baby clothes. I cleared out one of my drawers of the dresser under the changing mat for the baby. From left to right, top to bottom we have white onesies (undershirts) with winter hat and mittens and a second changing table cover tucked behind. The center slot holds random baby stuff I haven't found a home for yet like extra cabinet locks and an adorable little picture frame. Then we have all the cute onesies. Bottom left bin is full of pacifiers and topped with baby hats (LOVE baby hats!). N ext bin over is all socks. The last bin on the right is leg warmers and leggings. I'm thinking that baby's uniform for home will be onesies and Baby Legs or leggings. But we will be eager to use those adorable sleepers for visitors and outings.

This is our regular diapering supplies cubby from child care, fully stocked with more homemade diaper cream, Birdseye flat and prefold cloth diapers, changing mat and all in one newborn cloth diapers. There's also some Dappi plastic pant covers and Snappi cloth diaper clips if we need more as back ups.

And in the closet nearby that, are all the disposable diapers and wipes we got sorted by size and type. This shoe holder normally sorts the child care cloth diaper covers by child but for the first couple months, it's all for Baby Saupique. :)

I used binder clips and my label maker to make size dividers. Right now it's "Newborn", "Size 1", and "Size 1 Overnights". See the coloring on some of the diapers? Those are late night message diapers from our first baby shower. Can't wait to read them and smile!

Here's the first mobile in the Montessori Infant Mobile series. I made this and several other for baby to look at while playing or nursing in the first few moths. Right now it is hanging over the rocking chair but I can also put them over the baby's movement mat.

This is the only unlocked cupboard in the kitchen. Home to all the child care dishes and bibs. The bottom shelf holds the Baby Bullet and Bottle warmer/sanitizer. Next to the Baby Bullet are children's placemats and flexible cutting boards. I love that the kids can go in her a get their own silverware or bib. ometimes it leads to a mess but most of the time they are great with it. My goal is to put self help snacks (applesauce cups, fruit, crackers etc...) on the bottom shelf for them to help themselves to a snack when they are hungry.

The top bin holds bibs (droolers I call them. Including all the ones customized for us during our first baby shower.) and the homemade bandana/towel bibs for eating. These things are great! They tie on (read baby doesn't pull them off every two seconds) are super absorbent and are large enough to cover shoulders to lap.

The second bin down holds a mis-match of child care stuff: mini milk and water pitcher, ramekins, small metal bowls, bottles, bottle brush, child size silverware (there's also another tray of these next to the bin that are all metal without the puffy handles. soft tipped infant spoons there too.), suction cup roll up placemat (for practice until ready for a real placemat) and refillable food pouches.

Not pictured is the basement, where we watch TV. There's a bouncy chair, exercise ball for bouncing baby in my arms or rocking on, another changing mat and diapering supplies, and a travel baby gym/basinet. In the garage I have a bin of Infant lesson materials that I've built on since I first started watching my friends babies. I have sorted them by developmental age and montessori suggestions of infant materials. (You can check out my Pinterest to see what inspired each bags) The bags include toys and materials, mobiles and infant stimulation and flash cards. My goal was to make it easier to keep the infants stimulated with appropriate materials that I can grab quickly, even when being kept busy by toddlers. : ) And the movement mat, a Montessori term for a padded floor area next to a mirror with access to baby toys and a large mirror. Our area is in front of the living room picture window. I put a covered yoga mat along the wall with a horizontal wardrobe mirror. There's a small basket of toys and books and a fabric coil tray that my friend made me that's perfect for displaying a toy or two for baby to grab like a rattle or teether.

And finally, here are our bags packed and ready to go! Hope I didn't get too carried away. Tried to keep the packing to a minimum with a few candy bars and DVDs thrown in there too.
